In many ways, design is democratic. It grows from, lives for and is used by all. In that way, our work in the government sector is always a reminder of what great design can do to make a difference in communities around the world.

For Jefferson County, we advocated and created a visual experience that draws from the recent visual aesthetic established for the White House and U.S. government websites. This aesthetic emphasizes good proportions, readable typography grounded in an updated, contemporary feel. Classic red, white and blue hues combined with imagery and elements specific to Jefferson County personalize the site.

It is a universally accessible design with an emphasis on function. We set out to vastly streamline their old information architecture and present the information in a clean, readable and aesthetically pleasing manner. Content is grouped into essential information labels, rather than titles and words not easily understood by the general public. We have heightened the affordance of buttons to contrast against other page elements and created a completely new directory section to assist in government transparency and accessibility. This redesign also introduces a new multimedia section with audio, video and photographs available for citizens to peruse. All of this is powered by a robust CMS with multi-level user controls and full-featured CRUD functions.

As with any high-profile website, transitioning from one website to another is just as important as the success of the redesign. Designsensory managed the migration process ensuring no site downtime. Content from the old site was available on the new site without any gaps. Bookmark paths were redirected to make sure old bookmarks would work with the new site structure. All in all, we are pleased to deliver great design and functional value to citizens of Jefferson County and look forward to recreating this success in counties and cities nationwide.
